Troops Out Movement

& Sinn Féin

The Troops Out Movement, although not politically aligned, enjoy strong links with Sinn Féin.

Troops Out Movement have always been thankful to Sinn Féin who, even in difficult times, have shown warmth and hospitality to our members when visiting Ireland and on our annual delegations to Belfast.

The following message was sent to the Troops Out Movement in August 2004 by Sinn Féin President, Gerry Adams:

A chairde agus a chomradie,

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Troops Out Movement.

The Troops Out Movement has played an important role in raising awareness in Britain about the situation in Ireland. Many Sinn Féin spokespersons, community activists and victims of British state violence and collusion have travelled to Britain over the years at the invitation of the Troops Out Movement to speak to packed meetings. The hard and diligent work of the Troops Out Movement helped break down the wall of dis-information which successive British governments have constructed around Britain's war in Ireland.

During these three decades thousands of ordinary people from Britain have visited the north on Troops Out Movement delegations to learn at first hand the impact of British policy on people here and to take that information back to Britain and use it against those who tell lies, seek to sow confusion and encourage apathy.

I want to congratulate the Troops Out Movement on achieving its 30th birthday, commend you for all your hard work of the past and ask that you continue with that work of information and campaigning in the time ahead. There is still a lot of work to be done. The Good Friday Agreement has not been implemented, British policy is still one of supporting the union, and there are issues of justice and equality and human rights which need to be tackled. Specifically the issue of collusion.

Thanks for all your good work and keep it up!

Gerry Adams
